The Student Press Law Center awarded Daryl D. Smith, the former editor of The Gramblinite at Grambling State University, the 2007 College Press Freedom Award. Smith fought efforts of the administration to impose review on the paper. The administration suspended operations of the paper for “quality control” purposes, mainly because the provost complained of negative articles. The adminstration eventually related after a public relations campaign by Smith.
The announcement was made last week at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C.
